We do a lot of hammering and when Sherry and Donna over at www.playbasedlearning.com posted their story of making their own geoboards, we “borrowed” the idea…
We used the carpenter’s tape measures to rule the lines (our favourite workers’ props at present – something about them folding up perhaps?)
a banging time was had by all….
We used words like measure, line up, check, maze, triangle, rectangle…

Now we often see the vacuum cleaner hoses being used for firefighters, but this time we’ve seen them taken to the logical conclusion of being connected to the “hydrant” (our hand pump) to carry water to the sandpit.
Who thought of this idea?

Joel and his mum found some books for us at the Bookmobile about space. They have given us some fresh inspiration to make space creations….
like moon buggies…
astronauts’ gear… (Joel might need to modify his space helmet a bit)

We also used Juliet’s idea about creating stars in the space box by hammering holes with nails…this brought a new group to the hammering, who weren’t interested in woodwork but are interested in space….
(We can’t get a photo of the stars inside the space box, because the flash spoils it – we need Elliott’s night vision glasses to do that…..)

Amongst all the busyness of our play outside, Thomas took the time to bath the baby…..
Then Jaxon came along and asked if he could help, so they gave her a shower as well.
There was a quiet little chat about how babies can’t stay in the bath by themselves, as they showered her and washed her hair.
Such gentleness and caring, and wonderful cooperation between Thomas and Jaxon, who has only arrived at our kinder today……
One of our favourite flowers for drawing and painting and just admiring is the bird of paradise flower – an old favourite of Mallee gardeners.
Drawing and painting them is a very engaging activity…
They make such a strong statement, and the colors are so appealing (who could resist orange and purple, amongst others!)
and now some children have been spotting them in other people’s gardens, telling us where they have found them, tuning into something that they may not have noticed before…
We got a special delivery today….
Ricky has arrived!
He was tired after his long trip from Japan, and we were tired after a 5 hour session in warm weather so we all had a rest…..But we will have some fun showing him around our kinder next week.
We hope Funky gets there soon!
so we can dream….so we don’t get tired…..
The children had lots of ideas for why there is night sometimes….and some theories for how we get night.
because the sun needs to go to the other side of the world….because the sun goes to sleep and then it wakes up…
So we used the space box and our trusty globe to make night and day.
If the earth is spinning in space, what happens to the people in Australia?
Well, we wake up at the start of the day…
and stay awake until Australia goes around to the back of the earth…
so that other countries can have some daytime.
What’s a washing machine box got to do with space?
Well, first we crayoned some far away galaxies onto it…
Then we rolled some black edicol dye over it….added some stars and planets…covered the opening with a dark cloth….and got inside. We used a torch ….
but also just sat in the dark and star-gazed….
We have some people interested in space , and the good old telescopes were needed. How many times does a preschooler make a telescope I wonder – it never loses its interest or appeal. (Ryan is new to our kinder, but this was a project he could take on enjoyably and independently.)
The colored cellophane and some sticky stars make it irresistible.
It’s been a hard couple of weeks 🙁 – for lots of reasons – and now that I can get back to the blog, the server has a problem that stops me from inserting images – so I’ll spare you the thousand words I would need instead for each picture, and hope they fix it quickly!
