A fairy garden – Pixie Hollow

046

Where was Poppy hauling this heavy river stone to?

047

Over to a tyre filled with sand that the girls had started to turn into a fairy garden.

051

These girls have played with the flowers, seed pods and so on from the garden many times before  – in the sand pit with sandpit cooking mostly – so making a whole new world was a big step for them. Ruby said “It’s Pixie Hollow” and that comes from a favourite DVD – but they proceeded to use all the natural materials they could find to turn it into their version.

052

We are very lucky that Mrs John next door doesn’t mind us “pruning” her flowers!

Since last Thursday, Kodie has brought some sea shells that she collected at the beach on the weekend, and the girls have worked hard on making a path of river stones leading from Pixie Hollow to – who knows where?

012

Kodie says watering the stones makes them shine.

Puff paint

We used Sherry and Donna’s recipe (www.playbasedlearning.com.au) for puff paint.

003

Equal quantities ( of selfraising flour and salt) makes the measuring so much easier…

004

Add a little water and some paint, put it all in a squeezy sauce bottle,  and we were ready to go.

001

Everyone squeezed their own name out…

010

concentrating on the stopping and starting…

009

and strengthening those hand and finger muscles….and then it was time to do whatever they liked…

004

(Ruby did “Chinese” writing!)

We found that the not so heavy paintings only needed about 10-12 seconds in the microwave.

057

but for some children, less is definitely not more…

056

I can see this activity being a keeper…Thanks Sherry and Donna!

Cropping time

It’s autumn in the mallee – time for the farmers to get busy with their tractors to sow the wheat and barley. We sowed some too – in cups!

014

First we decorated and named our pots – most children decided to turn them into people so they could grow green hair!

Next came the potting mix.

Sprinkle some wheat.

018

Add another layer of soil.

019

and some water….

001

and after a week, some of them have hair! ( I wonder if anyone will notice what has happened to the potting mix at the top of the cups?)
